One of the first big historical sites we visited in Thessalonica was Philippi. As we drove to the site, a huge statue of a lion had been pulled from the river. Dated back to the time of Alexander the Great, missing the tongue and tail. Philippi was a great site with an ancient ruin and forum. You could almost hear the oration happening as you walked between the columns. It showed the site where the Apostle Paul was imprisoned prior to the earthquake freeing him.
