Proverbs 1:2-6 (NRSV)
2 For learning about wisdom and instruction, for understanding words of insight, 3 for gaining instruction in wise dealing, righteousness, justice, and equity; 4 to teach shrewdness to the simple, knowledge and prudence to the young— 5 let the wise also hear and gain in learning, and the discerning acquire skill, 6 to understand a proverb and a figure, the words of the wise and their riddles.
Summer is almost over! School starts on August 14th and parents all over the area are cheering. Education is an important part of growing up but many believe that the learning stops when they graduate and that simply isn’t true. I do see some disturbing statistics that say Americans only read one book a year after they graduate from school. Proverbs tells us that even the wise can gain in learning so you’re never too old to learn something new. Learning doesn’t have to be dry or boring. It can consist of trying new things and being open to new experiences.
It can consist of challenging yourself physically or artistically and, of course, mentally. We all get into a rut. We want to continue doing the same thing we’ve always done, in the same way, we’ve always done it. I love the saying “that if you do the same thing, the same way, you will get the same results.” So I challenge all of you to try something new, step outside of the box, increase in wisdom and grow. One of the best ways to try something new is to volunteer. We have had many chances to volunteer this past summer from Food Pantry to Health Clinic to Mentoring, the opportunities abound. It means stepping outside of your comfort zone and taking a risk. It resembles the risk that the disciples took when they threw down their fishing nets and followed Jesus. They left the safe and comfortable and followed God. Even though summer break is coming to an end, there are still plenty of opportunities to volunteer. Step up and step out, and be blessed.
