Shifting Sands

Luke 6:46-49 (NRSV)

46 “Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I tell you? 47 I will show you what someone is like who comes to me, hears my words, and acts on them. 48 That one is like a man building a house, who dug deeply and laid the foundation on rock; when a flood arose, the river burst against that house but could not shake it, because it had been well built. 49 But the one who hears and does not act is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the river burst against it, immediately it fell, and great was the ruin of that house.”

We have all heard the parable of building on a shaky foundation. We know that in order to build our lives on a solid foundation, we must have faith in Jesus Christ, read the Bible, attend church regularly and be a member of a small accountability group. We seldom talk about the shaky foundation. Even if we live good lives, we can still be building upon a shaky foundation. We can live a life that is self-centered. The Bible, from cover to cover, is emphatic about this – self-centeredness can ultimately destroy us. Another shaky foundation is resentment. Resentment, anger, jealousy, envy, vengeance, hate is a destructive spirit and a poor foundation for life. It won’t support us over the long haul. Another shaky foundation is fear. Fear is an insidious danger for living a Christ-Centered life.  It makes us say and do things that do not reflect the love that Christ has for us. Remember not to let self-centeredness, resentment or fears cause your foundation in Christ to become shaky.  Remember that Christ is a solid rock that we can build on and that will take us through this life and into the next safely.
